As the title says, really. I sowed some cabbages seeds in April, but they were murdered by slugs. I'd like to try again now, but want to try and get the timing right. Any thoughts appreciated...

I've just sown some red cabbage in a poly tunnel in the expectation that they'll provide a winter crop. (They'll be planted outside later).

Its always worth a try - you've nothing to lose and germination will be a lot faster and more reliable than in April.

I've given up sowing brassicas in the open garden and now always start them in trays under cover. This gives them much more protection from slugs etc and also allows me to treat the young plants against club root when I transplant them.

cheers Dave - will give it a shot. Good tip also about the slugs - I'll put something over them.

By "under cover" I mean in the GH, polytunnel or indoors.
If the weather is as hot as its been recently, if you cover seedlings in trays you stand a good chance of cooking the veg prematurely!
