Is it possible to grow leeks straight into the earth from seed and is it now too late to sow the seed? Whats the easiest and most sure fire way?

I planted some 'Farinto' variety in trays 6 weeks ago and they still haven't done anything so I'm getting desperate to have some growing in my garden to cure my leek withdrawal.

This late on you might do better to buy (shock horror! ) some seedlings ready for transplanting. When a man needs a pot of thick steaming hot soup after a hard day's work in the garden in autumn I'm afraid all scrupels have to go out the window :D

I've just planted 50 bought from the local GC as my own are way behind this year. I will, I hope get my own planted sometime within the the next week or two.
Rather late for sowing now I think.

Got to agree with Frogesque about soup. A good bowl of leek & tattie is hard to beat!

They take ages to germinate if planted outside, so do be patient. Best of luck!
