From the gardening books, it seems that all veg need full sun, with the exception of one type of lettuce (I forget which one)

Do any of you please have experience of veg that will manage in shadier corners?

    Thanks again,
    Alexei

I grew perpetual spinach last year quite successfully in a cold frame which only gets about half hour of sun per day.

Previously when I had a small veg. plot, I noticed that it didn't seem to mind being in the shade of a neighbours rapidly growing hedge.

Perhaps a strategically placed mirror might help with other veg.?

Most veg will grow in some shade, as long it is not TOTAL SHADE.
all the books and seed packets give you the optimum growing conditions, but some is trial and error.
try growing small amounts of the veg you want, and see how it goes, what does'nt do well don't grow next year, or try a different var.

Like Rossco says much depends on how much shade -total or partial.
We've a high wall on the south west side of our garden and it shades several feet of some of our veg beds. The main difference this makes is that the ground near the wall takes about three or four weeks longer to warm up and dry out in spring, but crops seem to catch up to within a couple of weeks of the full sun beds.
Most veg enjoy moisture and if you are in south England it doesn't look like you'll be able to apply a hose this year. You might be in a lucky situation if your veg are shaded and don't need additional water.
Sow and plant and see what happens and next year you'll know what works in your situation.

I'd suggest trying anything that you eat the leaves of, NOT things you eat the fruit of as they need sun to ripen!
