I am a very lucky guy. Visited my grandad yesterday and talked to him about gardening, he has stopped and i have started. Mentioned i was looking at buying a compost bin and he said he had one i could have.

So i have a green plastic compost bin with a little compost flap at the bottom. Previously i had a compost bucket which has not worked out great (too small).

So i am going to clean it up but only have concrete to situate it on, thought i would stick some old compost bags underneath. Put dug up roots and twigs at the bottom, and then layers of ripped up card board, the bucket of compost and some drowned weeds.

Guess i am looking for any beginning tips.

Moving the composter revealed dry oak leaf compost, so i also have 5 bags (25litres each) of that. Yey.

Apparently, you also need worms and you can buy those from fishing shops!

I also have not needed to buy worms, they found their way in!
And today I collected some horse manure for my compost bin!
Last week I collected a whole load of coffee filter papers from the Farmers' Market.

Not bought any worms as of yet. I put a bucket (full of compost) that i had used for and earlier composting experiment into the centre of the heap and that had a full wrigglyness of worms.

Then as i built pile i scattered rich soil that have previous compost overspill in in throughout the pile and i found that quite wormy aswell.

As i find worms whilst doing other jobs they get a transfer to the compost bin.

I've been topping the pile up but not remixed it so i have not checked on the residents of the pile.
