    Hi all,

I'm after advice please on using lawn sand.

Make your own or buy ready mixed?

    Formula?

Is it better to use a complete weed, feed and moss killer?

    Any tips?

    thanks in advance

Lawn sand is sand with ferrous sulphate added to kill moss in lawns. Assuming this is what you want to use it for, then buy a commercial product, but make sure you read the instructions before using.

I take it the problem is moss?

For moss I either use iron sulphate or enforcer depending on if I can scarify the black moss aweay quick enough (enforcer is more expensive but doesnt turn it black).

I never use granular feeds as I find they work out fairly expensive and its easy to over aply.

Instead In spring use a 15-0-6 liquid feed sprayed from a knapsack. I buy my chemicals from ALS.

If you do use iron sulphate then spray it on using a cup full in 10 litres of water. As for weeds, I treat these seperately using spearhead (the comercial equivalent of verdone)

    Paul,

Yup, Moss plus ground could do with a bit better drainage and the grass has hardly grown since September. Not a lot of weeds.

I think I would need the certificate or competence to buy the professional products.

    Thanks

If you know a green keeper then they might give you a bit as its comparitvly cheap.

Although Ive got spraying tickets Ive never been asked for them so cant see youd have a problem.

The advantage of ferrouse sulphate is aswell as killing moss it green the lawn up without causeing a flush of growth, usefull if you only cut fortnightly!
