Rather than buy one hire one ( a proper hollow tine corer) Hss hire do them code 62326 www.hss.com

rake up and compost the cores then brush brush sharp sand into the core holes.

A feed with a high nitrogen based fertilizer in the spring and definately overseed the bare bits again in the spring.

What is the lawn and turf top dressing? - compost? Also do you feed your lawn every week with growmore? - does that help a lot? I thought most lawn fertilisers say feed once or twice a year?

Years of chicken activity can produce a lot of chicken 'muck' which is high in amonia and can be very strong. It may be that the soil surface is high in this hot chicken muck and is burning the roots. Only suggest you water very regulaly to dilute the ammonia. I mentioned on a previous post about evergreen where I suggested using a liquid feed from www.superspray.co.uk ie lawn magic which will strengthen the root structure.
