We had a new lawn laid 6 months ago and its in fairly good condition but it has a number of tufts of grass on one side. They would appear to be tufts of a different type of grass, they are lighter and grow much quicker than the rest of the lawn, consequently they stand out rather badly. What can I do to get rid of these ? Is there name for this condition ? I could provide a photo if my description isn't informative enough

You do mean a different type and not just the tufty edges that the mower can't get to that usually needs a strimmer to get rid of?

I don't mean the edges, I have a strimmer to deal with those. I mean tufts of what appears to be a different grass that are sprouting in the middle of the lawn

Do you know what type of turf was used?

If it was purpose sown seed turf there is usually no problem...sounds like it may have been meadow turf which sometimes contains course clumping grass that doesn't immediately show up....so looks perfect for a few months then the course grass grows through in places

this site has a few good pages on lawn care,
    http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/techniques/lawn1.asp#lawn_start
but basically you might have to dig out the clumps and level and seed the bare area, if the clumps aren't too big then you can get away without seed as the grass will spread over the bare areas eventually anyway, but if the clumps are large the seed will help fill up the gaps

    Hi Darius
Could well indeed be the coarser grasses as Steve suggests but sounds like Couch grass to me, I have it in my garden, although considerably less than when I moved in - its a matter for perseverance  ! check out this link
