Hello, I'm a newbie here and a single mum who is looking for some simple advice if possible please, it would be very much appreciated.
I just received a quote to lift my tired, patchy, very lumpy old turf for a fresh new lawn... the size is roughly 50ft x 25ft... I don't want to publish the price on the website but more than happy to share via PM... as money is tight for everyone these day and I have children to feed, I just want to run the price by someone who is experienced in this field (pardon the pun)

    Many Thanks

    Heti x

I'm afraid it's a "How long is a piece of string?" type question.

Your best bet is to get another couple of quotes which detail exactly what they are going to do, if possible speak to a former customer of each for whom they've done a similar job and get their opinion of the work. Then make a decision.
It's a buyer's market these days, as long as you aren't in a hurry.

Small firms will often give you two quotes (if you ask). One for the job including VAT and one for one "in a brown envelope" if you know what I mean.

mmmmmm! Thanks for the quick reply... I'm just a little concerned as it's not a few hundred pounds and I am not very experienced at this... hopefully someone can give me a rough idea to the nearest couple of hundred.

Well, if you bought the turf from say B&Q yourself it'd cost you around £350. Then there's the labour and disposing of the old turf.
Obviously, a contractor might get the turf cheaper than that.

Thanks DG... so if I say my quote was just shy of 2k, would you say that's a bit to much or the going rate

    I'd say!

As I said, get some more detailed quotes.

Why not just call a lawn treatment company (Green thumb, Greensleeves etc) and see what they say. The quote will be free and it might only be £15 per treatment.

    Did I read £2K !!!!!!!
They're having a laugh. Don't think about that price.
I think you could have it done for a quarter of that paying top of the range.
    Shop around.

We lifted the old turf and put down seed. Admitedly the lawn is only 20 ' x 10 but it only cost us about £20.

£2k is far too much! You might be able to revive your existing lawn with regular mowing, feeding and weeding. Get the kids to help and it will cost you next to nothing.

Cost of the job seems extreme and it always pays to get more than one quote and would always ask friends and relitives for a recommendation of a company they have experience of. Don't always go with the cheapest however, my brother did and had to have it all done again because the finished job was so poor. The price could be high for a number of reasons, the cost of removal and getting rid of the old turf, maybe the lawn has difficult access or they could just be trying it on with a single mum.
