As some of you know, I intended to try and match Dan (vegmandan) if not beat him, we're talking onions here. I played sneaky, built a raised bed in my fruit cage, planted my best Kelsaes and waited for the accolades?

I didn't reckon on my juvenile Dalmatian dog. She's clever, very clever!!!!! I don't know how but she managed to open the fruit cage door, trimmed my "show" onions along with the raspberries and ate a glut of strawberries to boot, dunno whether to laugh or cry!

You ought to have sprayed for dalmations in may.

I once had a dog that wouldnt eat chopped red cabbage unless you put it on a plate, put it in the fridge for 20 seconds & then took it out again.

Heartbreaking I know but our dogs are our life and there's always next year for the onions ?

Still trying to fathom out how she managed to gain access! I've now doubled the door catches and the onions and raspberries do show signs of recovery LOL

I really did make the fruit cage Dalmatian proof, unfortunately NOT 45kg Utonagan proof! Amber our young Dalmatian enlisted the help of our mighty Utonagan male, Merlin!

Merlin and Amber are best of buddies, so he dug a nice big hole for her under the fruit cage (Utonagans are JCB's on 4 legs!).

What are onions afterall? just balls with green bits sticking out?

I'm never going to come close to achieving my goal of a 5kg onion but I'll still try and Amber hasn't found my "onion bed" yet, well, she has but I've put up 6ft fencing which keeps her out but won't stop Merlin!

Think I have a couple of 1kg onions, wont know for sure til harvest, dry them out and weigh them.

I dread to think what Amber and Merlin would do if you were growing pumpkins. They too are just round balls, only maybe orange in colour and very large... LOL

Seriously, maybe Amber likes onions and likes to eat them really fresh. :thumb:

Fortunately she doesn't eat the onions, onions are poisonous to dogs :(

I must be a sucker for punishment, kept one of Shadows puppies, Arwen.

I don't know how but at the age of 12 weeks she has managed to get into the fruit cage and graze all the lettuces I planted there for "safe" keeping! :'(
