A Hosta can be grown in a large pot and will last from May through to September. As a herbacious perennial it will come up every year.
The flowers are nothing special but the foliage is what gives hostas their appeal. There are many different varieties ranging to green and cream verigated ones to a blue/green.

Hi, chilliheaven, and welcome to GC!

I have a Hydrangea in a large rectangular pot in a pergola with a cane roof and also a cane Begonia, the giant type. I cut it back every year, it's about four foot tall now, but it's mother which I had to leave with a friend in England is 22 years old and 8/10 foot tall.

Green choices could be a rubber plant, a Caster Oil plant or a palm.

    Enjoy the forum!

    hi chilliheaven

    welcome to the forum

the shady corner in my container garden has a few deep purple heuchera and a fern 'cristata the king' both of which keep some foliage all year in my sheltered yard - though they get a bit scruffy towards the end of winter. a few things like euphorbia, tricyrtis and aquilegia also do well in shady pots but die back in winter,

hope you find something you love,

I've thought of Pulmonaria or lungwort. They have spotty leaves which look a bit hosta like and beautiful blue/purpe flowers in early spring. Definately worth a look.
