Has anyone any tips for buying and planting wall troughs. You know the type of open wrought iron baskets. I want to get a rectangular one about a meter long.
Do they make house walls damp?
Any planting ideas for east facing site?
    Thanks [IMG]

I think a trough would be the same as a half basket that is hung on the wall. Just lined the same way as a hanging basket. But if you are concerned about the water seeping down or into a wall, just line the back and the rear of the base with plastic. That way it will keep the water away from the wall. You could plant it with busy lizzies, begonias, Trailing ivies etc. You dont say whether it would be an all year round feature, or just spring - autumn. But line it with moss. It's a rather large container, so you could line it with last years scaryfying thatch or a thin layer of moss / hay and place old jumpers between the liner and compost. The jumpers can be cut for planting into the sides, they act as a barrier to stop soil falling through, and also as a brilliant water retainer.
Maybe someone else might have suggestions for plants and how to tips, Good luck.

So now your other half will know what's happened to his favourite jumpers, Compostee!

    Good thinking, though!

I like to put in some taller stuff at the back, same as with any planting - tall bits, surrounded by lower bits, with trailing bits. Good recipe for any container or basket! :D

Mount the trough on two small wooden battens. THis will prevent water on the wall and also, make is easier if you're taking them down for the winter

I've been growing snapdragons from seed. Do you think they will look alright in the back of the window box?
A friend told me they were bi-annuals.Is that true?
