paul, i'm no expert on this but I have taken some in the past.
I assume you are refering to the tuberous rooted types, you need a tuber that has two or more shoots. Let it grow on until the shoots are about three inches high, then cut off the lesser of the shoots with a small sliver of tuber.
Pot it up as you would a cutting of any other plant and keep it warm and shaded, with luck it will root.
You then need to grow it on as fast as you can in order to form a tuber that you can save for next year.

I did put a small amount of rooting powder on mine, more as a defence against rot than anything else.

Hi I am new to site only registered today so do not know if I am allowed to ask a question about this existing topic, I bought a begonia last year, it is still in pot and looking great about 9 inches high, when should you take cutting ?

    Welcome JAN and fire away!

If it's in a pot and has been growing all winter then yours is probably one of the fiberous rooted begonias (as opposed to the ones from corms) and you can take cuttings from them any time they are in good growth. They will root (strike) readily in gel, moist compost or even plain tap water in a yoghurt tub. Just provide a bit of warmth out of direct sunlight and make sure they don't dry out.
