Hi, This is my first post and am new to gardening after moving into our new house a couple of years ago, got my first greenhouse last week!!! I have a couple of questions.

    1. I have been given some broccoli and brussel sprout plugs, can these be grown in large pots as I don't really have a veg plot to put them in.

    2. I have been growing dwarf french beans from seed, they are about 6 inches high, do they need pinching out.

    Thanks

    Hi pinksmarties,
Not tried growing sprouts or brocolli in pots, I tend to think not, they get big and would become top heavy.
As to the beans, I've never pinched them out.
I assume you've got them undercover at the moment, they will need to go outside for the bees to pollenate the flowers

Thanks pete, yes the beans are in the greenhouse (unheated). The reason I was asking about the piching out is they look quite tall, one single stem 6-8 leaves. Will it bush out naturally?

I also have some sweet peas in pots that are falling over as the stems are tall and skinny do I pinch these out? Don't think they are light starved, they have been in bright light from go and now in greenhouse.

I will probably be asking loads of questions about all sorts of things, reading books isn't that same as getting advice from experienced growers!!

Well I never pinched out french beans, but thats not to say you cant, I normally sowed outside in late May.

The sweet peas can be pinched, its normal practice with them, they are quite hardy and should be acclimatised to outdoor temps now.

Ask as many questions as you like, there is always someone around with a bit of advice, its just that sometimes you might get too much and have to decide who to follow. :D

Hi Pinksmarties welcome to the forum, no need to ask what's your favourite sweet although I like the orange ones myself! :D

Don't worry too much about your sweetpeas they never look their best when they are young seedlings, in fact they can look really straggly!

Just pinch out the growing tips and once you have planted them outside keep tying them up as they flop everywhere they are not a hard plant to grow and if you have any of the highly scented variety you are rewarded with quite a heady scent in the garden really smashing!Good luck. Hel.xxx.
