Helen always looks on the bright side, but she is dead right. I've got clay but over the years with plenty of digging and digging in (manure and peat) it is now excellent. All the digging nearly broke Boss lady's back though. [IMG] [IMG]

Sadly, no building work nearby - there isn't really anything nearby as we live out of the way! ;) If there were a few stones in the ground we might dig them up and make something of them, sadly it is *mostly* stone and little soil... We looked up hiring a mini digger from local tool hire (Jewsons) and it would be almost £200 for a weekend - way above our budget. I'm going to call around local companies tomorrow as I'm out at the library today.

Jewsons arent a local firm, they are a national chain hence the high price the last time I payed £200 for a digger was two days hire of a 3.5 tonner and this is a larger machine than you need!

Weekend hire using the local firm i use on a 1.5 ton machine including fuel and delivery would be £120 tops.

If you look in a local paper or directory you should be able to find an owner driver or small hire firm.

If you cant find anyone in the direcory try asking of the local farmers, they always know someone.

Failing all this, Buy a good pickaxe and do it a bit at a time.

When I said local, I just meant closest - I know they're nationwide ;) I emailed a local firm today, and will do some ringing around tomorrow.

Don't think I have the heart to pickaxe the whole garden - I've had enough excavating on digs [IMG]

Lol, I can imagine how much people will want to come to that party ;) Sadly, I don't have many "green" friends around here. I've decided to see if we can borrow a mattock or pickaxe from someone and do the garden bit by bit - I've got a strong back and shoulders on me so I can do it, just being lazy I think!! Half of the garden will be a chicken enclosure anyway, so we cna leave that mostly wild, as they will destroy anything growing in there anyway!

No matter how long it takes you to do your garden and remember gardens do take years to mature you will without a doubt be really pleased with yourself Linzi and even more so as Davie says if your able to do it yourself.....but that's easy for me to say as I'ave got Bob to help me out or should I say I help Bob out? Hel.xxx.
