Is my clematis dead?!

I planted a clematis two years ago, to climb up and over our pergola. The plan was working fine until this year, when it has not grown a single leaf nor come into flower.

Everywhere I go at the moment, I see everyone else's clematis in full flower! Can anyone advise what might be wrong, or if it is past saving?

A couple of points of interest: firstly, the insides of the branches/shoots are still light green. Secondly, it flowered twice last year (but don't know if that is either out of the ordinary, or significant!)

As you can probably tell, I am a gardening novice, and this is my first day on GC, so all help appreciated!!

Clematis can "come and go" I have lost - or rather thought I had lost big well grown montanas only to find a couple of years later back they sprouted. I have also planted a second clematis next to one I thought was dead then a few years later found I had two in the same spot, so don't give up on them, but always plant them DEEP.

I put a plastic plant pot colar round them so I know where they may reappear from.

Should I cut it right back? I'd like to plant a wisteria in the same spot.

do you remember what time of year it flowered? different types will flower at different times.

Clematis and wisteria can look lovely together - the wisteria acting as a trellis for the clematis, so go ahead plant your wisteria, but next to your clematis, not instead of it and by the way - another topic, but read up on which type of wisteria you want and preferably buy one in flower.

 

It flowered at around this time, and then again later in the season (but not sure when).

Why should I buy a Wisteria in flower?

Also, should I prune back the Clematis?

If you buy a wisteria in flower then you know it flowers, some can take a few years before they flower and you don't want to be waiting. :D

 

I bought three last year as young plants. One is doing really well in a pot and has a flower. One is in the ground and has a few shoots with one leaf on. One is doing nothing at all, it looks dead! It's green under the surface though so I live in hope.

 

some plants are shy of flowering, so safer to buy in flower.
