New Year Signs of Spring!!!

Just been out in the garden checking for any damage from the bad weather last night. One of my Passion Flowers (Lavender Lady or Amethyst?) is looking decidedly battered and my Summer Jasmine is shrivelled on one side. So with heavy heart I started to clear the fallen leaves from the Cordyline. And there they were, little shoots of Alliums standing proud and hopeful Looked closer all round the garden and yes, my white Alliums and Allium 'Hair' are all sprouting and the Crocosmias got some shoots showing, as has the Michaelmas Daisy and Lobelia 'Victoria'!! :D :D
It's really cheered me up!!
It's not a little early is it, for all this growth???? Are they going to have problems if we get some seasonal weather?

 

Gosh you're lucky Windy. I was only saying to beloved this morning that the daffs are very late showing through, up north they would have begun to peep through around the end of November. However, not all doom and gloom the aquilegia 'red hobbit' is starting to sprout, as are some gladdie type leaves (not a clue what they are but certainly not gladdies!). If only it would stop raining/hailing/blowing!

 

yeah the hails been real bad today :eek: Enough to flail your skin off!!!!!!! Daffs are late on the farms here too, plenty of foliage but as yet no buds. But I did see one solitary flower in someones garden yesterday - probably vanished in the storm last night!!! :rolleyes:

 

Been in the garden a while this morning. I have plenty of small shoots coming through. Do not know what they are with been a new garden. I have planted a lot of bulbs late I know but hope for the best.
Only 25p a box or bag in focus sale so just had to buy them. Bye G4

PS Can I still plant Allium bulbs

 

I don't honestly know much about bulbs, but I reckon who dares wins!!! Just pop them in and let nature take control Nowt to lose!!!!

 

Does anyone know if the Alliums usually have 2/3" of growth this early in the year?? And if not, how will they fare if we have some colder weather??

 

Well a lot of my alliums have more than that up and I am not worried, and I am in North Midlands, not balmy, sub tropical Cornwall - I reckon you will be OK. :D
One of my alliums, Allium cernuum never seems to die down, not that I have noticed. I dug up the clump cause it was overcrowded and potted some up. The green shoots are still some 12 inches long.

 

Thanks for that Geoff!!! I'm new to this (does it show?? :D ) and only planted the Alliums on the 18th Nov - but it's been 10 degrees + here today, not exactly January weather even for balmy Cornwall So glad they'll be ok - I'll watch their growth with fascination!!!! Thank you

 

I sowed some alliums in November or even later. I left some in a cold greenhouse and some have germinated.

 

Only the White ones and the 'hair' are showing so far - but I'll be taking an avid interest in the others now!!!!! :D

 

Noticed today that hazel catkins are out. Temp has been around 12 C most of the day and yesterday I got a touch of sun on my face while down at the beach.

 

is anyone expecting frost and or snow?

or is the mild weather here to stay?
