Big Plant ?

Hello, we recently moved house and have inhrerited what looks like a giant yucca.

Can anyone assist in identifying this plant please ?

Looks like a Phormium, one of the larger ones, Fantastic plant if you've got the space.

 

Definitely Phormium Tenax, may have flowered before and should do again, birds like the seeds.

 

Many thanks, having now looked around the www for info on Phormium tenax i am totally convinced that's what it is.

Just measured it, its actually 8ft high and 7 wide. Now just got to figure out what to do with it.

I am thinking dividing and moving it, what are the chances of a monster like this coping with life in a largish contaner. I dont want to "loose" it but i dont want it getting any bigger once its been tamed.

 

We have two Phormium Tenax in our garden, one of them grew very large not unlike your one, we split it up last autumn and put the plants into pots.They have grown very well.We had nine flowers on the largest of the two plants they are quite spectacular, the birds and the bees love them.We had to use an axe to split it up, it sounds a bit drastic but you will see what I mean when you come to split it up.Good Luck

 

monkeyisland, if you want one in a container it might be better to go for one of the smaller coloured leaf types.
