Dog Wood

    I have bought 2 dogwood plants today, any advice as regards the best areas of the garden they should be planted in plus how to maintain and encourage growth would be very helpfull.

    They do not like it to dry, a moist area of the garden is best, but will grow most places.
    When you have planted it, if it is over 12" then reduce it to that height, to a pair of buds if poss.
    Reduce to that height each year.
    Which var. of dogwood (cornus) is it?

    The plants are Cornus - alba "Westonbirt" they are 30" now, should I trim them back to 12" after I plant them this week?

    as they are that size go to 15" after planting, the same each year after, unless you want a 10' shrub, or higher.

    they can be coppiced, cut down to nearly ground level, but if you want to do that they want to be established a couple of years first, to be on the safe side.
