    Hi,

Moved into a new house about 1 year ago in Huntingdon, and I have a shrub in one of my beds that I can't identify.

Can any help? Also pruning advice would be useful ;)

    Thanks

    Dave

Hi Dave and welcome to GC.

It looks very like my Viburnum and, if it is, it is too close to the house for starters.

It also looks like the Prunus lusitanica (Portugal Laurel or Cherry Laurel) but again, if it is ... ditto above.

Let's see what others have to say.

Hi demoneye & [IMG].. It does have a familiar look to it, but was wondering if you have ever seen any flowers on it... Only it does have the look of a skimmia, but then again maybe not so that was why I was wondering if you had seen flowers on it.....

    Hi,

It's actually planted on a boundary wall...

I've never seen any flowers on it.

It's grown quite tall - should I do some agressive grooming on it?

Having looked at some pictures of skimmia online, I think that is correct. So what can I do to reduce the height and "fill" it out sone more. It's very "leggy" at the moment.

Are there non flowering versions as I can't remember ever seeing it in flower?

What closer pictures of the leaves help?

Thanks.. Well, OK I go back to my original thoughts then as to me definitely a Skimmia japonica & especially if no colour change to the leaves in winter...

 If it were me I would reduce the central growth branch by about 1/2 to make more of a bush shape & to allow the side growth to come up.. The time to do it would be now at the latest I think...:thumb:

It looks more like a Rhododendron to me, whatever it is, it is much too close to the wall.:gnthb:
