If you mean the actual computer, no monitor and mouse, yes you can buy just these on their own. (I did here Tesco are doing them. on line only)

All I've ever done with mine which is ten years old is change the processor and the hard drive.

    I've done that twice now.

Digressing slightly, I don't have anything "personal" on my computer. It's all on a separate hard drive and duplicated on a couple of memory sticks. Financial stuff is also on two floppies. So if my computer has to go away for repair, there's nothing on it to which I wouldn't want anyone to have access.
I try to back up stuff every week, but I confess I sometimes realise it's been three weeks!

I have my address book some e-mail files and Explorer favourites duplicated on the separate hard drive. If my computer crashed, the loss of these would be a real pain.

I also have the side off the machine every couple of months and give it a vac out, particularly the fans, they really can get clogged with dust.

I usually buy my computers from Staples, ex demo machines. The present one bought in January is an Acer Aspire X3810, Space saver, E5200 Intel Pentium, Core 2 Duo, 2GB DDR3 (upgradeable to 8GB), 320GB HDD, DVD Super Multi drive, 9 USB ports, Sata Port. It had Vista installed but I removed that and installed Ubuntu/Linux v9.10 now changed to v10.04. The cost? £235.

I sold the previous Acer Aspire to an acquaintance on Social Security.

I keep my bookmarks, addresses and other important files on free storage (2GB, Unbuntu One ) Cloud, as well as ext HDD's

Edit I went to Tesco's today, what do you think? They have the X3810 on sale at £350.
