passion flowers

can any help me. i bought some passion flowers last year from jersey as seedlings. planted them. they were fine. i'm not sure about pruning them. are they the same as clematis and regrow or do i have to prune them to help them on or what. any one who knows please email thanks. stacey14.???????

 

Stacey, what were this passion flowers ? Have they made it through winter outdoors ? I always cut mine back to about 24" in March,for final pruning,the hardier type,just as new growth appears, leave some good offshoots, cut just above, a bit shorter with the less hardy,in greenhouse.

I tend to cut back acording to available space. If you cut back hard you will delay flowering to late summer I find. Wereas a light trim brings on the flowers a bit earlier.
As they are young plants, maybe no pruning at all will be needed apart from cutting off any dead pieces

i would go with what pete says, if they are young plants just make sure they are protected from hard frosts i only tend to prune mine when climbing into unwanted places but mine are like 3yrs old.

We have an indestructable passion flower!

It was growing over a huge ceanothis (sp?) bush/tree last year which was so huge and out of control we decided to cut it down.

At that time the passion flower consisted of several long spindly strands draped over the tree.

When we cut it back I chopped the pasion flower strands back to nothing - and thought i'd killed it.

Anyway it's regrown up the fence now and it has gone much bushier and fuller. I'm looking forward to it flowering as they are truly beautiful to see.
