My head says that an eye for an eye is not the way to go but my heart says.... and would even more so say if it was a loved one of mine murdered by these thugs.... that I would make sure they were always looking over their shoulders for the rest of their lives, never knowing when they would have the same 'justice' metered out on them.

I think if the justice system is going to insist on remaining impotent against these perpetrators, then it is only left to the public to make sure there is some deterrent here.

I would want to permanently delete anyone who did this to a person, from society.

The sentencing judges should be made to have a spell in real-life society instead of in their often aloof, unreal world of privilege and isolation from these lowest forms of society. The judges need a wake-up call.

Kandy. I said I was 12. The toothfairy only owes me a fiver I used to get 10 bob a tooth. So I gave a mate a couple of quid to smack me in the mouth. Of course, if there had been GC in those days I could have got it for free. :D

So you're classing these wanton murderers as HUMAN, John? I wouldn't even call them animal life, the would just give the impression that there was a certain ammount of intelligence there. What do you mean by 'low life'? are you a vegetarian? To kill is to kill, it doesn't matter what you're killing.
We humans ( [IMG] ) are unique on this planet. We have evolved a moral code, or think we have, that seems to suit our reason for existing as a society. This case seems to show that it is totally inadequate. Does your Hipocratic Oath take this into acount?
I, like many others, find Captial Punishment distasteful but that can only be due to the brain washing I have received through out my life. Justice died many years ago, if humans could ever understand what justice is. We are morally bound to do the 'right thing', it's just we don't quite know what that is. [IMG]

:( John, I feel taking a life is senseless violence, be it war, or by yobs like the one we are talking about here...

:( The only difference as I see it is, the yobs are doing it for a pastime these days... "Mustn't upset them" ..... Well ****...!! I begrudge paying for their board & lodging "at her Majesty's pleasure"...

 The same should be said for terrorists.... Why should these people be allowed to hold the honest, decent, innocent, person to ransom...!!!!

No I still say "A LIFE FOR A LIFE"..... For people like them... :(

[IMG] Now I am probably wrong here John but if it was the Hippocratic Oath you took.. Then surely...

Why can't punishment fit into the rest of life outside medicine.??

Sorry Marley. I don't intend to get re-involved in fragmented ethical arguments again I keep doing it and I just get mad. I will state again my ethical position. I DO NOT BELIEVE IN TAKING HUMAN LIFE. That is my last comment on this.

Personally I dont support capital punishment, there have been too many wrongfull convictions in the past. Countries with a death penalty have similar crime rates to those that dont.

However I would deport all imigrants convicted of crime straight away and make prison less about rehabilitation and more about punishment. Imo part of the problem could largly be solved by increasing sentencing and life meaing life.

Couple this with labour camps for illegal imigrants and the able bodied scroungers claiming benefits for more than 12 months and we might get somwere.

Intrestingly one of my customers is a magistrate and aparently part of the problem is they have to follow very ridgid sentencing guidelines, there is little flexibility.

I'm sorry you have bowed out of your discussion Sarra - I was genuinely interested in your perspective as a medic.

I was wondering whether American doctors have any input in the states where lethal injection is legal for capital punishment. This must prove to be a very difficult ethical situation they are put in - or do lay people do all the medical side of executions?

I presume the Americans take a similar oath on entering the profession, so wonder how they get around this dilemma.

Please don't totally abandon this thread Sarra - you have interesting things to say!
