It is the night before my Int 2 maths exam (I failed maths when I was at school (passed Arithmetic - but that's not good enough nowadays) - but need it to train as a primary teacher).

I have been studying towards this for a year - and have been working really hard (before work, during work (lunch covers etc) and after work. Then after making tea, I get in another hour or two.) I am still a bit unsure of a couple of things - but my problem is when I get into the exam.

The pressure mounts - it's all or nothing - and my nerves kick in! I lose all sense of focus and any chance of thinking goes out the window!

Anybody got any last minute hints to help me out tomorrow?

    Anything considered, all appreciated!

Go for it JarBax, You can do it. I was in the same position as you a few years back for the same reason. I did it and so can you. I know the Scottish system is different but I found a lot of the questions were things I do a lot anyway like converting meters to feet (I only know feet and inches)Remember to breathe and to try and keep calm [IMG] Good luck!

Tomorrow morning, don't think that it took you one year to work on something that you can blow in one day....It is one day like another.

With the occasion, I would like to dedicate you a song from an Italian composer , the title of which is: "notte prima degli esami" (night before the exams).
Unfortunately it is a lot of words and music so so, I think that it is meant to reproduce the mood on the day...
nevertheless I hope that you will appreciate the thought...

    roughly translated:

I have a memory of four boys with the guitar and a piano on the shoulder, like the pines (trees) of Rome life does not break them, this night is still ours, how do the secretaries manage with glance at the lawyers to marry them?.
The six o clock bombs do not hurt, it is simply the day that dies.
The exams are near and you are too far away from my room, your father looks like Dante and your brother like Ariosto , this evening in the usual place, the moon looks strange, it is probably because I haven't met you for a week. Exams, I wish I had taken you before, my hands on your breast (cough cough), the mystery of you is deep and your sin is original like your American jeans, do not stop please my hands on your stiff thighs (cogh cough), shut like the churches when you want to confess your sins. Night before the exams, night of police, sure you took some away, night of mummies and daddies holding the feeding-bottle , night of grandmothers at the window, but this night (tonight) is still ours, night of young actors of cold pizzas and "trousers" (so it is called a pizza folded in two and sealed), night of dreams of football trophies and champions, night of tears and prayers, mathematics will not be never my trade, and airplanes fly high between N.York and Moscow, but this night (tonight)is still ours, Claudia do not shiver, I will not hurt you, if the love is love. The lights are on, here on the stage, there are so many friends around that one feels like singing, perhaps they are a little bit changed, sure a little different, but they still want to change, if love is love - if love is love - if the love is love etc.

Boa sorte, JarBax. You've got a lot of backing here.

My advice ... I never studied, confused the brain too much amd could cause stress trying to remember everything ... but I passed with flying colours with that which was really instilled there ... but that was me. [IMG] We are all different.

Miraflores ... what can I say but quote ...

"The lights are on, here on the stage, there are so many friends around that one feels like singing, perhaps they are a little bit changed, sure a little different, but they still want to change, if love is love - if love is love - if the love is love… etc." Beautiful.

We are all with you in spirit, JarBax [IMG]

Thankyou so much everyone! I feel a little better knowing you lot are out there wishing me well!

Miraflores, Thankyou - I really do appreciate the thought, even had a wee chortle to myself at some of the translation). Thankyou! [IMG]

My head is throbbing as I have just finnished the last of my past papers! Luckily, I persuaded my line manager to give me tomorrow morning off for 'study leave'. As I work in a secondary school (in learning support), it seemed quite appropriate!

Double luckily, I persuaded the powers that be to allow me to sit it in a seperate room, as I know some of the kids sitting the exam (the humiliation!) - actually, it was worse last year when I was sitting my int. 1 - I knew a LOT of the kids - and supported many of them in class!

So a small room on my own, with an invidulator to myself is what it is! (100 times better than sitting in the hall - I'd be doomed from the start if that were the case!)

Anyway, enough ramblings - off to the books - LOL, unlike you, I NEED to revise!

Thankyou so much again for your support folks - it helps! [IMG]

Here's my tuppence worth based on a lifetime delivering education and far too long sitting exams.

    1. Read the question.
    2. Understand the question.
    3. Read it again and if you can answer.
    4. If you are not sure move to the next question.
    5. Repeat 1,2,3 & 4.
    6. Come back to the questions you were not sure about and answer with an intuitive guess.
    7. If all else fails - waffle and chance it.

I got a mark in a geography exam question 40 years ago for - "Where did the Duke of Edinburgh spend last night?" When I answered "In bed". The "correct" answer should have been Kenya.

Thankyou Dave - I will follow those steps! Also had a wee giggle at your exam answer!

My mum sent me a postcard with a cutting from a magazine reading 'peppermint oil helps clear the mind during exams'. I don't have any peppermint oil - but I have popped a peppermint tea-bag in my pocket! I'll try anything once! [IMG]

PS. roders - just opened your li nk (how could I have missed it before?!) Great - off to scoff some choccy biccies! Thanks!

Just to say thankyou so much for your helpful advice and support! [IMG]

I don't know whether to feel elated it's all over, exhausted after all the work and worry, or just plain pleased that I didn't panic (well - just about kept on top of my nerves!)

I was more nervous than I can remember feeling about just about anything else - and that's saying something! I think it was the waiting til 1pm for the start. Had it been 9am, there wouldn't have been the awful build up!

However, your tips were invaluable! I tried not to worry once I got in there - and took my time methodically going over the questions, and passed over the one or two which threw me, concentrating on what I COULD do! Then came back to them. I know I went wrong in a couple of places, but feel so relieved now it's done!

Had a wander round the garden - funny how everything's more exquisitely perfect, more colourful and incredible, and more sweetly perfumed than this morning...

Thankyou again so much - all your comments, support, encouragement and hints made a big difference! Hope maybe reading this will help someone else too!
