This made me laugh ! :D

Steve Irwin Croc hunter has had the last laugh on his main critic Germaine Greer -- with his portrait replacing that of the outspoken feminist at Australia's National Portrait Gallery.

Greer generated a storm of outrage when she said the animal world had finally taken its revenge on the self-proclaimed wildlife warrior when he was killed by a stingray in September.

"There was no habitat, no matter how fragile or finely balanced, that Irwin hesitated to barge into, trumpeting his wonder and amazement to the skies," Greer said shortly after Irwin's death.

"There was not an animal he was not prepared to manhandle."

The Canberra gallery said Greer's portrait had been taken down last week as part of a regular rotation of works and dispatched to the basement.

It has been replaced with a 2005 photograph of Irwin standing next to an elephant.

"It does look fabulously ironic, but there was no agenda behind it," National Portrait Gallery spokesman David Edghill told Sydney's Daily Telegraph.

"We don't play portraits or personalities against each other."

I dont suppose it will come as a suprise, but I just could not stand the bloke.
    Sorry. :(
I reckon he was one of those types that you either liked or hated.
As for Germain Greer, well I never liked HIM either. :D

I am partially with Pete - I watched a couple of his programmes and didn't like parts of them - too popularist. I have no idea what the guy was like in real life and would guess he liked the animals and nature and wanted to share - but some things I saw made me feel sorry for his subjects.

David Attenborough is more my scene. Sad eh! :D

As for the gallery, more about public appeal methinks. Whatever will get the punters in [IMG]

I liked Steve Irwin and enjoyed his programmes no end. My grandsons loved him, felt like he was talking especially to them. I think he had a way with him to make kids sit still and listen and learn about animals and nature. On the other hand, I often wondered that he took such chances and hoped that kids did not try to copy him by being "brave".

I agreed with everything Germaine Greer said, I could never watch him.

For the first time ever, I totally agree with Germaine Greer. The crocs and other animals he manhandled were always trying to get away FROM him. I would bet that the ray that killed him was similarly trying to escape. Subsequently, numerous rays have been shot and speared in revenge or in the mistaken belief that they are dangerous.

I am sorry he was killed, but I had no time for him at all.

I think whatever money will come in will go to the animals .. but then that's only my thoughts.

Mark Carwardine wrote in BBC Wildlife Magazine said it all:

Yet still the wretched programes are shown as endless repats on TV. Still children watch them and think its OK to mistreat animals. Wonder how many Aussie kids have been hurt while trying to imitate their "hero"?

Have you ever tried approaching a crocodile like a domestic cat? Did it work?
