Youngest has been scratching for about 4 weeks now. I have checked, combed, rechecked and picked... and found nothing. I have changed his shampoo, conditioner, washed his hair in plain water - nothing. Last night I decided this was a last rummage or its the Doctors....

OH-MY-GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!!! I had him in the bath and combed his hair - after about 3 minutes, I finally found one - it was HUGE!!!!!!    and hanging on for life..... I managed to finally dislodge 5 of the b*ggers.... caked his hair in gunk and had to get him up extra early this morning to wash it all out and inspection.....
If you have kids - they have nits - fact of life and there is NOTHING you can do about it. UGHHHH!!!!

.... so tell me - why can't Dads ever deal this?????? It seems to come into the same category of "accidents" of the smelly kind, throwing up all over the bed and dealing with the kids' Mum who your youngest has splattered on the way home......

    MEN!!!!!

My little boy has had them twice, and the minute you see one you're convinced you have them yourself! Horrible things and you'er mortified the first time. Keeping everything crossed he doesn't get them again, Though I heard tell that they only actually like clean hair! Don't know how true that is!

It's what I've heard too, Sheppy...... You've GOT to believe it, or die of shame!

The nightmare is if you've got a kid with asthma, as they have to have a different shampoo. Great fun!

Dear Honey-Bee, I understand your frustration and your horror.
I myself hadn't seen one before in my life (and we are talking until a couple of months ago!) and now i could write a book on them....For those who don't know we are talking about head lice.
I give you my "Italian" advice, as we use olive oil for everything....
Olive oil makes lice die instantly. But you have to make sure to reach every corner and use it in abundance. The more you leave it the better it is. So theoretically, if the big ones die nobody can lay more eggs...
Olive oil is safe and healthy. You can use olive oil to cure newborn skin when irritated!
Expensive lotions are more chemicals added on the child and you really don't need that.
So you can use olive oil as a "conditioner" prior to wash the hair very well.
This treatment will have to be alternated maybe with a hair conditioner (next time you wash the hair) which is to be applied to dry hair in abundance and be left for max ten minutes, because otherwise it would be irritating.
Then if you want to research some more what substances to use to kill the beasts...when you find one, isolate it in a safe container, and experiment to put something on it to see if it dies.
of course you have to have the courage to pick one up first...
I have found for instance that a cheap shaving foam makes them also die instantly, but certainly I wouldn't use it as a conditioner. So, if the child scratches his head you check immediately why and, should you find one, you spray on it a little amount of foam, taking care to cover it completely, and it will die instantly.
That's as far as I found out so far, good luck, you need it!
