No, but I remember when the Sainsbury's in Luton had wooden floors with sawdust and it had separate section for fresh food and pre-packed. Eggs were sold individually (brown or white, madam?), bacon was cut on a side hanging from the ceiling, butter was chopped and formed between two wooden pallets and so on. Tinned and packed stuff was in the other half of the store.

And we (the family) used to write a shopping list out in a little book and take it to the Co-op and they would deliver the goods next day.

    ... I'm good at hi-jacking as well, Strongy ... :D

Victor Value.... oh yes!! I used that in Liverpool in the 80s when we were broke!! They had the same blue and white stripey wrappings on their stuff that Tesco has on its value range - I always assumed they'd taken over VV..... Don't know the other one though. Maybe I'm too young.....

And LoL - I remember having a number at the Co-op, when you had to put your shopping-bag in a pigonhole, take a basket, get your shopping and quote your number, get your dividend stamps and stick them in!! And the shops where there were shuttles going around above your head to go to the cashiers, and they sent the change back down the same way.... Oh nostalgia!! :D

And it's not hijacking, all this - it's a comparison with attitudes then and now, isn't it?? [IMG]

And the solid marble counters LoL, I remember Sainsbury's in Edmonton in the sixties too, nearest one to us now is 35 miles away in Poole.
Dendy, they may have taken over VV, I remember the bags being the same. [IMG]

True, Dendro, NOT hi-jacking! Yes, I remember those capsules that the money was placed it and flew around you head! Also remember the Green Shield Stamps!

Strongy, I think besides the marble counters there were great wooden blocks for chopping with cleavers and the like. Edmonton ... NW London way?

I have marble counters here and wish I didn't!

Many years ago, back in the early seventies the company I worked for got the job of panelling out the Sainsburys board room.
I was presented with all kinds of teak wall panelling from one of their first shops and told to adapt it to fit the requirements.
It involved joining various sections of mirrored and panelled pieces that really didn't want to go together along with fluted pillasters.
No way would a shop have such panneling in it these days, the end result didn't look too bad.
I wonder if its still there, now. [IMG]

strongy, my dad was very anti the co-op movement, and all lefties, so we gave any divi to a charity account.
they are re viving the divi in some areas, which is a great idea if you shop in one, but there are not many round here

There was a lengthy discussion in THE GRAUNIAD last year about remembering, or not remembering, the Co-op divi number...anyone see it? I don't remember ours.....
but when I got a Boots Advantage Card, I told my partner that "it's just like your old co-op divi"...and he didn't know what I meant! :( Apparently his Mum never shopped in the Co-op...

30558! Divi is now revived round here and my number is now 330558 :D
I very rarely shop at the co-op these days but I am told at the local branch you now can pay your Council Tax.

Wonder if you get divi on that?

I HATE Tesco's!! Well, perhaps the larger stores might be OK, but the local TESCO EXPRESS stores are nearly all rubbish. The one locally (England's Lane in Hampstead) took over a very nice local shop that sold organic food and some of their own brands, and replaced it with....a very small range of stock.
    This morning I wanted
    (i) coffee filters. NO COFFEE FILTERS!!
(ii) Matches - the large Household boxes. NO GODDAM MATCHES! NO MATCHES!!! [IMG]

Havent a lot of time for the big supermarkets .Dont like their attitude to customers at the tills .Most checkout staff cant seem to smile or hold a semi-intelligent conversation with you. Also dont like the way that they squeeze their suppliers by telling them when the suppliers goods will be on special offer.Thats right the supplier has to take the reduced price not the suppermarket.Thet also pay for the goods up to three months after they have been sold . As an ex HGV driver who used to deliver to all the big distrubution centres and be treated like a mobile store because they did not have the staff to off load and check my delivery (six hours for 4 boxes of apples I kid you not).
That said the suppermarkets have given us access to a range of products from all over the world that was not available 10 years ago. So I suppose its swings and roundabouts .
