Hi chkm8, yes fish certainly aren't a cheap hobby. I have huge external bucket filters and a powerful pond pump. Each tank is about 1500litres 1.5 tonnes of water which leaves the tank through the filters and back, twice and hour!!! I haven't bred my currrent stock as I have loads of catfish that hoover up any eggs that the oscars lay. I used to do tank plants but the size of the tank and the types of fish I have now its a waste of time. The catfish would uproot everything and the plecs would eat them in hours.

talking of eating guess who spent months building a huge shoal of neons then added a pimilodus pictus (yeh the silver catfish black spots and big long feelers) hoovered up the entire shoal overnight then lay on the bottom like a baloon about to burst.

rosa! not another bad experience! If the fish survives until the tail heals, it will be okay and it will adapt to being without its rudder. But they are slow healers and the chances are that it will become infected. It should really be taken to a vet ASAP. I doubt it was a cat as contrary to popular belief, cats don't really like fresh fish and certainly not these exotic kinds. It was more likely a stoat or something similar or even a heron, maybe.

chkm8, I did something like that when I had a coldwater tank with a couple of beautiful fantails I'd had for a couple f years. They used to come up to the surface and take food from my fingers! But I went and got a couple of little golden bottoms feeders (I thought) that looked like those golden centipedes you see in the soil. I popped them into the tank, went to work the next morning and when I came home, they'd eaten the eyes out of my lovely fantails!! I was so shocked I stood in the corner of my room and jst screamed and screamed! Then I had to catch the poor fish (and the new ones) and dispatch them at once. I converted the tank to a tropical after that. Ugh!!!!!

Rosa, if you need to dispatch of your fish humanly a person I know told me that you put the fish in a container or bag and add a few drops of clove oil..they then just quietly die.Not tried it myself but asked in a fish shop(not the type with chips) :D and they confirmed that this works. hopefully your fish will pull through, we had seagulls taking fish from a neighbours pond last year.

Oh, Michaelmasdaisy! I had four beautiful fantails years ago and I would have had the horrors if something like that had ever happened to them! :(

Having had my morning walk with the dog it's off to the golf course or into the garden - not sure I could cope with washing AND polishing the car it would be too much of a shock to my friends and cause a great deal of abuse from my children.

Am most impressed with the fish stories - mine are suffering from this interminable heat and no doubt breeding again the outside pond ( just goldfish and shubunkins I think).

I have another interest in selling pictures on
E-bay since I have plenty of stock left from a post retirement business venture - have seen again the grass snake around the pond - do they eat fish?

If they are desperate they eat fish but their normal diet is frogs. :(

BM, those tanks look like marine fish tanks. You need a nice piece of coral in them. I used to keep marine fish. I paid over £40 for a pyjama fish which was about an inch long. Sadly it knocked itself out and died after 3 days in the tank, but our clown fish and regal blues (just like the fish in finding nemo) were great and looked fantastic with their colours.

My other hobbies are cross stitching and of course allotments. I am currently growing a banana tree in my greenhouse. Any tips on feeding? It is about 1 ft high. Has a stalk that is about 2 inches wide and has a new leave each week.

    Hi BM
Sounds like you like your fish ;)

Your tank photo`s aren`t loading for me but i`m sure they`re great.
Pond pumps and bucket sized filters are marvellous for aquariums, you can never have too large a filter [IMG]
Here`s an oldish low quality snap of my antisocial catfish. She`s very friendly to people and feeds from the hand but attacks other fish like a pitbull, hence she lives alone [IMG]

She`s around 23" long now, very powerful and her head is the size of my hand.

A great character, likes to snack (loves dogfood, tiger prawns and chocolate cake!)and is unique in that she could take herself off for a "walk" if she ever got the urge [IMG]

    pretty much like this:
