Unfortunately I work as a claims adjuster for one of those big insurance companies.
I only deal with a very specialised area of the commercial side of the industry though, but do get involved in some pretty interesting stuff (ie Employment Tribunal claims)

I was a GPO telephonist in the 60s when you had to put your hand up to leave your position...
People were often very rude to you as they could not see you, we were trained to be polite at all times...But if some one was really abusive...you pulled the plug out..cut off? so sorry..
before STD that was...was a very interesting job. :D

Love it, Rosie .. my t'other half was a "switchboard operator" in the States in the 60s when he was in high school and used one of those systems with the plug and lead or whatever and thought it great fun because it was at a motel and he could listen into the conversations! :D :D :D

I'm now a retired housewife, mother of two, stepmother of two (all grown). Still have a 21 yr old at home. I worked for many years as an investigator with a social service agency and then worked as an Executive Aide at a small college until retirement.

    Hi rosietu

We used to have a local switchboard in our village and all of us that had phones only had three numbers. Ours was 296 and, although we have been on STD for donkey's years with a full number, I still answer the phone with "296". It quite often causes people to pause when phoning me.

I'm an computer technical support analyst. 36 years working with computers and still counting. I've got to the age where I'd rather be working with plants, they have bigger brains than most of my users.

Doing a World tour this week. Driving to Wellingborough, Spalding, Leeds, Carlisle and Cumbernauld, spending Saturday night in Barnard Castle then driving home on Sunday. I'm thinking of making a T-Shirt with the tour dates on the back.

Rich, your profile says you were born in 1905, at 101 shouldn't you be slowing down a bit? :D :D

Thought it was about time I posted on here what I do - although its totally boring....

My trade is accounting, but since spawning the devils - er - I mean since giving birth to two delightfully wonderful boys, work isn't important to me - I just go to earn a few pennies to contribute to the "pot".

I am currently working part time for Social Services paying the Old People's homes.... politics and greedy people abound in my day-to-day job, although there are a few really lovely people too. I don't want stress and aggro at work (got enough of that at home!!!!). I also do a spot of childminding - just the school run... I am trying to give it up, but the parents just DON'T get the hint!!!! I have de-registered, but all the kiddies are over 8, and I do keep cooking their favourite choccies fudge cake.......  . I suppose if I was wicked and evil they may go.... even my two little darlings haven't put them off!!!!! :D :D
I also "do the books" still for the pre-school the two horrors went to... in all, sometimes I work over 45 hours per week!!!!   .... so much for being a part timer...... no wonder my house looks like a bombsite......

I qualified as an early years teacher last year and I am currently looking for a job. I'll probably end up working in Tescos (it's easier to get to than Asda).

Celia - you'd probably find it a nicer life!! :D Either Tesco or Asda, I mean!! Maybe I'm a bit jaundiced, though..... Hope you get a chance to teach, lots of people enjoy it, honestly!!

I'm a gardener!! Have been in the trade since 1983. Its great but - and this sounds familiar - hard work for little reward. Still I haven't stopped.

I did try teaching - only in a crammer (or whatever they are politely called nowadays) and lasted a whole day. On my way out of the door the headmaster offered me a job. Christ I thought, poor kids. My auntie in law was a teacher and boy is it a tough profession and a fine skill to boot. Hats of to all you teachers/ex teachers. I taught horticulture for the old City & Guilds for a year - that was fun, then found myself being taught by one of my ex pupils when I did my Masters [IMG]

My back is creaky, and I've always found chiro to work well, though when I fell off a ladder and did my shoulder some damage I was too frightened to go, and went to a physio first for a couple of months. Got an earful from the chiro when I eventually saw her.
