Taming a wild area

    Hi folks
    Down the side of my drive I have a line of trees with rough grass and moss underneath.
    My aim is to put down some granite edging and raise the edge level above the drive.
    How do I remove the wild grass/moss.? This soil is hard, compacted, full of rocks and tree roots.
    Can I just cover the area with new soil.?

    It depends what you want to finish with. If you want it to be lawn afetrwards then yes, just cover it with new soil, depending how deep the old grass may shoot up through. If you don't want grass then either dig/scape off the grass or use a non-residual weedkiller like Roundup.
