Which variety of tomato do you grow?

Last year was my first with a greenhouse and I gew some Moneymaker which I thought were awful tasteless things and some unknown cherry type which were delicious.

this year I've gone a bit mad and bought loads of different seeds to try but would be interested to hear who grows what and why

We used to grow moneymaker but like you found although we had a good crop they seemed rather tasteless.

For the last few years we have mostly grown Gardeners Delight which, although small are usually nice and sweet flavour.

Then we also buy one or two plants of different variety hoping to find one that crops well and has a nice flavour. So far we haven't found anything to compare with GD.

I grew gardeners delight last year and was very pleased with them - really nice taste.

Just for the sake of variety, I'm doing a different one this year - Gartenperle. At the moment they're tiny seedlings, just starting on their 2nd leaves, so it'll be a while before I can report back re taste

Last year I grew Moneymaker, Gartenperle, and Dolce Rosso from Morrisons [ saved seeds]. The only ones I liked were the Dolce Rosso, lovely small sweet fruit.
My neighbour up the road grew moneymaker {I bought my plants from him for comparison] and his tomatoes tasted better than mine did! Gartenperle were a disappointment.

Moneymaker need carefull watering, Too much and they can become tasteless, not enough or too hot in the house and they split.'

GD are more reliable and tollerant, sweet flavoured yet with a good bite - ideal for salads.

Going to try some yellow toms this year as well but I have heard that the flavour isn't fantastic.

I usually grow Gardeners Delight and Sungold although I am trying Sungella instead this time, it is supposed to be a Sungold hybrid, same flavour but larger fruit, I shall find out later in the year if they as good. [IMG]

Gardener's Delight for outdoors. Moneymaker, Sparta and a Greek tomato in the GH and tunnel.

Sparta recieved a good review in one of the gardening magazines so I thought I'd give it a try.

I use outdoor grow bags and put three Gardeners Delight per bag. I'm going to try Sweet Million this year as well.

I grew marmande last year and got a lot of bottom end rot with it.
I am growing golden sunrise (yellow toms), gardeners delight (favourite cherry), moneymaker and alicante for comparison.

They are in the propagator and are so far looking good!! [IMG]

    Marmande-
Tried it twice Pete but was not impressed by the yield per plant. Though perhaps the yield may have been influenced by growing in the GH rather than outdoors.

I would stick to my plant of cherry tomatoes, so that when I have to make a salad , I just stick my hand out of the door and...voila'

I have grown it in the past, but tend to grow "Black Russian" now. Like "Marmande" it can become misshapen and also has a rather bland flavour raw but very tasty fried [IMG]
