We don't sow HA directly in the ground because they just get dug up by the foxes  instead we sow them into plugs & transfer them later, but there is something I don't understand! Why is it that on the pkt it says you can sow them outside from March onwards yet if you want to grow them inside you need heat to germinate   Why? surely if you are growing them inside its the same if not better conditions than sowing them outside! so why the heat?

I think its probably because you will sow indoors(usually greenhouse) ealier in the year, when the greenhouse is still pretty cold. Whereas when you sow outside later, the sun will warm the soil.

I often sow HA's in Autumn and often, but not always, get a fantastic show from late spring on.

Last year's lobelia flowered profusely from spring to the end of september.

And I live way, way up North where we don't get much heat!!
