Good evening hope you can all help with a bit of advice. I'm embarking on looking after my first garden, and I have what I first thought was a flowering bulb. I have numerous clumps around the garden of a plant which do have bulbs, but have the characteristics of a weed? ie they are all over the place.

This plant has a series of short thin leaves but doesn't seem to look like its going to flower? any thoughts. Apologies if this is garbled. DT

Without a picture, it's a bit hard to answer that, Darren! There's a really irritating description of a weed as "a plant growing in the wrong place!" - so anything could be a weed! Could you put a photo of your problem plant on, and we'll try and help?? ;)

Mostly, what is generally thought of as a weed doesn't have a bulb, usually either a tap-root, like on a dandelion, or fibrous roots, like on willlow herb.

use photobucket - upload to there, reduce by 50%, then copyt the bottom of the 3 descriptions under it, and paste into here!

Might they be Grape Hyacinth? I have large areas of them in full leaf but no flower shoots as yet.
These are in a tub and typical of ones in the garden..Sorry it's a bit dark. [IMG]

    Grape Hyacynth
are the leaves about 3 1/" long thin and all come from the base, almost fleshy and thinner than a shoe lace, is the bulb white and are they all less than 1/"2 or

are the leaves $ to 5" long, only a few of them and bulbs white, mostly 3/4" inch diameter with a fresh almost lime green look

Lesser Celandine certainly has a bulb, and in my book is definately a weed. You have probably got that too Darren T - but it is not the one you are showing.

But as Dendrobium says "who is to say its a weed". I have a friend who digs up her Lesser Celandine and sells it at car boot sales!!! In fairness she actually likes it.

True, PeterS - they're great in woodland settings, but a real pain otherwise!! Definitely another bulb-weed! ;)
