I'm very new to gardening, i've done some patio work and have an arch way installed which goes up and over then connects to a pergala. So i'm after a plant that will grow up from a 1ft square base of soil up and over and also allow other small flowing plants to grow at the base without totally taking over. Any ideas?

is the soil at the base just 1 foot deep or is it deeper?

how far has the climber to go? i.e how vigorous? do you want it evergreen or not? (does limit choice) what about colour? any preferences?

i have some lovely climbers in my garden - an old fashioned honeysuckle which looks and smells glorious - a red climbing rose - pauls scarlet climber and a several clematis montana being the most prolific

ooh what is the site of the soil like cos clematis do not like full sun on their roots

Well there are many Clematis to choose from that flower through the year & the Montana is a beauty (in flower now) & smells like marsh mellows, but the rest of the year it is green as it is pretty much an evergreen...
You could also put something that is later flowering in as well to ad interest..
Jasminum (jasmine) is a popular climber with a delicate scent, and there are many cultivars for summer and winter. Jasminum officinale (summer jasmine) is perfect for a sunny, sheltered spot in mild regions of the UK. The cheery yellow flowers of Jasminum nudiflorum (winter jasmine) will brighten up even partially shaded and cold sites at a time when little else is in flower.
There is the Chilean Glory flower as well... Hope that is some help..:thumb:

Being the impatient person i am i went on Ebay and ordered:
Wisteria Sinensis Seeds - Hardy Evergreen Climber,
    Morning Glory- Grandpa Ott's Seeds,
    Climbing Hydrangea Seeds

I have a south facing patio and a square foot hole in wwhich i inetend on planting two of those climbers the hole ends at the earths core without a concrete base. I think one of the other climbers is good for north facing walls and so this shall go on my back fence.

    Any tips on the seeds?
    Getting them started succesfully
When do i plant them (time of year, size of plant )
    anything else????
