Hi folks. Having just moved into my new home, I`m now at the stage where I can turn my attention to the garden. It seems I have a well established ivy ( [IMG] )growing at the bottom end. What I`d like to know is, do I have to remove every piece of root to get rid of it, or can I just get rid of the worst of it and control the rest with weedkiller ? Cheers...freddy.

Weed killer doesnt in my experience work on ivy.

The best otion is to pull it up then fork or rotovate the ground. If the groud is very hard i often break it up initially with a pickaxe.

Ivy is fairly slow growing so any shoots that slip the net can be easily pulled once the hard works done.

Hi Pro Gard. Thanks for the quick response. So, the roots aren`t a real problem ?

No, Ivy roots are fairly minimal at the best of times. If theres a lot of ivy, pull it then break up the ground with a pick and rake it over.

Freddy I agree with Pro Gard in my experience with horrible wall invading ivy I have found that even a very well overgrown lot doesn't have that much of a root system, so I don't think you're going to break your back removing your own troublesome lot! ;)

Ivy looks very nice but is extremely destructive... I had to replace four sections of fence last year due to a neighbours ivy that had grown through and demolished the fence.

The neighbour, thankfully, treated the ivy with Glyphosate and killed it off leaving me with the unenviable job of removing the roots.

Hi folks, thanks for the reassurance [IMG] . As things are, the last thing I needed was the prospect of having to dig that lot out. The garden here is over 200ft long (although only 13ft wide)and I think I`ve already got enough to do ! Cheers...freddy.
