i made a stupid mistake of leaving a box of bonemeal out in the thunder storm last night. When I looked this morning the box had completely dissapeared and the patio is covered in a layer of bonemeal. oh dear! At least I will have some healthy weeds.

Interesting question - I'll bet there are as many answers that come up as there are veggie growers on the site.

Personally, I clear, sprinkle, fork over lightly and then cover with a three inch layer of compost or manure (although I always pick where the carrots are going next year, mark it and NO Manure!) Nice smoothing out with the rake, and then the Terrier does his wild terrier dance all over it, rolls, and then laughs at me. I think it must be something about the bone meal - does it every year, and there is just no stopping him.

Last year I tried out putting a good layer of grass cutting down before the compost - by spring it was completely gone - just rotavated the lot. Had a brillant crop of asparagus this year - best we have ever had.

Now I wonder if soil type will dictate technique: we are neutral/acid, heavy clay. Most of our veggie beds are over 7 years now so getting good and friable.

Too much info? Probably, just felt like talking about it.
