What a wonderful day Bob and I had in the garden yesterday. Lovely weather, a little work and of course a nice cool drink [IMG]

We had just finished talking to our sweet neighbour when what seemed like hundreds and thousands of flying ants appeared from the side of the garden path!

Never seen the dirty devils before in my life and I'm afraid I freaked out a weep bit to say the least....screaming like a banshee, running around in circles like a headless chicken!

Ran screaming into the garden gear looking for something to kill them with only found greenfly spray, didn't seem to work so the bleach came out too much to Bob's horror!

Soaked the dirty devils to death just hope I haven't killed too many plants along the way!

Searched on the internet and found that they don't live long after being airbourne but I really couldn't cope with waiting for them to die!

I'm pleased to write I'm back to normal now and glad to say that the police wasn't called nor the men in white coats for the loonie screaming in her garden! :D

Yes Dizi I did have one or two after the event [IMG]

Not sure Bob would have been too pleased having a mad woman running about with a just boiled kettle, he's pretty brave but not stupid or is he? [IMG] Lol

Hi Helofadigger, we had them yesterday also. We usually see one batch of them at the same time every year but yesterdays were the second lot. They dissappear as quickly as they appear.

Hi Pip I don't think I would have too much of a problem with them if they appeared and flew off while I was not in the garden.

I'm not a scaredy cat but they did freak me out and I really did scream ....shame on me a 41 year old woman acting like a silly girl, but then again who wants to grow up? Not me! ;)

    Oh poor you Helen, :rofl

Can i whisper (ssssssh 'cos it's a secret [IMG] )

I use Nipon, [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] it gets rid of the little blighters and can be used indoors and out.

Doesn't seem to harm plants etc., you could always borrow one of my dog's, they chase and eat them :D :D :D well trained or what

    Thanks Paula
If critters don't bother me I'll leave them alone but boy I'm gonna get tough with ants in the future give them a good seeing to with that Nippon... nothings gonna stop me enjoying the garden while it's this lovely out [IMG]

Sounds like your dogs are as crazy as my yorkies they will take on anything no matter how big or small, although even they would want the ants covering in chocolate for them to eat first! [IMG]

    Way to go Helen :D

When they were all puppies they played around chasing bubbles from my gadzillion giant bubble maker, kinda got em used to the idea, now its become a tradition........ [IMG]

The youngest one is really quite thick but adorable and will happily watch a bug climb a wall for hours........yawn.

But yep Nippon the flying blighters, i'm right with you there :D

Fascinating creaturs ants shame you had to slaughter them they will not do you any harm lets hope they completed their nuptual flight before they were slaughtered, they are only airborne a day then usually drop their wings run around find somewhere to hide then reproduce next year, a large percentage fall prey to birds etc, my fish enjoy them.

I've used the powder Nippon and the gel in my compost bin and neither did anything to my ant problem!!! I try to be organic as much as possible but the ants are incredibly numerous in this garden for some reason. I've tried boiling water, flooding them etc but they have just bred incredibly fast and massive holes have appeared in the soil where they go to the nests. 100's of them flying around the other day, hopefully that will be it now but not looking forward to it again next year!!!!!!!!

The best remedy I've found for ridding yourself of ants is a few drops of washing up liquid with water in a spray bottle ... kills them instantly!

I have a bottle sitting by the sink now as we had an invasion through the window for a couple of days on the trot overnight.

Safe to use in the kitchen and safe for pets.
