Ok guys here's the jist. The other day I was offered quite a large rabbit cage for free. not wanting this to go to waist I agreed to take it. once I got home I wondered what to do with it as I don't want a rabbit or any other pet that could go in it.

What I done was this; drilled some holes in the bottom for drainage, put in some soil and filled the rest with the contents of a grow bag. I then proceeded to plant some strawberry seeds in it. the result is this:

    Hi Sausage.
Maybe you should raise it off the ground, don't want those naught snails to gobble those tasty strawberrys. [IMG] [IMG]

An unusual pet, Sausage! ;) Since strawberries always used to be grown on the ground, with straw underneath to protect the berries themselves, I don't see why you should have a particular problem with slugs - and they can climb! If they are a problem, though, you could always surround the cage with rough or sharp gravel.

yeh, if the snails are a problem i'll take required action. just thought i'd show you my new plant pot lol i'm proud of it and I bet i'll get a one hell of a strawberry patch in it. the cage will protect my berrys from birds etc' and the top opens up as a handy little hatch. just thought i'd put the idea across in case anyone throws away one of these when i think it's ideal for my strawberrys or even anything else i might grow. I can even transport it to my greenhouse if need be. what do you's think of the idea of using an old pets cage as a plant pot?

Thanks, i found a sneaky snail on the bottom earlier so quickly removed it. once they start growing i think i'll move them them to higher ground and put spikey stones around.

You could suspend it Sausage like a hanging basket that would help keep the slugs &snails away

Great Idea! I might look into that! would obviously hang it out of sight because 1 it may look silly and 2 someone might phone the RSPCA.

Weird, for some reason my picture has disappeared.

I couple of years ago I looked out of the window to see a squirrel eating what turned out to be the last strawberry as he had polished off all the rest. I ran to chase him and he was so stuffed he could hardly move. So your cage is a brilliant idea. [IMG] [IMG]
