I'm a newbie on this site but I really like the look of it. Need some help. I was given a box of 100 mixed bulbs for christmas, is it to late to plant them now?

I would agree with Paladin - that checking what kind of bulbs - daffodiles, tulips, or what.

If you can't do that then seperate them into groups of roughly the same shape and size. If you can upload a picture some of us may be able to recognise them.

If they are tulips, whilst ideally planted in November, if you get them in now, they should be fine.

Daffs and other really early spring flowering bulbs its really too late for them as they should have been planted in the autumn to get their roots established before shooting and flowering. However storage is going to be a problem til autumn - not sure what conditions would be required to keep them dormant.

I wonder if putting them in a very cold dark place in damp compost would get them to produce root before shooting?

FAO Fran and Paladin, thank you so much for taking the trouble to reply. If I had my brain in gear I would have told you that the bulbs are a mixture of Tulips, Daffodils, Dwarf Hyacinth and a couple I can't remember but they are all packaged in a box with names on them so identification won't be a problem.
Again many thanks, any more advice gratefully received.

Hi Val...good name, I would bung them all in the ground as long as its not frosty, even if they don't flower this year, I'd take the chance unless you have ideal storing conditions, they could go mouldy left in store.

FAO Pixie, I guess your names Val aswell. Thanks for advice, I think I'll try what you suggest, just stick them in and hope for the best.
    Cheers, happy gardening.

I agree, I've been really lazy some years, not planted my bulbs until now and got late blooming flowers. I think the daffodils are the most critical, some packets I've got say don't plant tulips 'til Christmas. [IMG]

How about turning this to your advantage in the future. Stagger your planting to extend the flowering period.
