This plant has appeared in my new garden and I'm having trouble identifying it. Does anyone have any ideas please?

Looks like a young lilac tree although I could be mistaken.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure, but I don't think it is a Lilac due to the size of the leaves:

Also, the leaves have only just unfurled and all the lilacs in surrounding gardens have already flowered and gone over. The leaves are reminicent of a fig in texture and thickness, but a different shape. Any further ideas?

It looks a bit magnolia-ish to me

Yes, I hadn't thought of that. That might explain the late foliage...

I've seen that leaf before, both the size and wavy edge but I am blowed if I can remember where. Looking at the stem its been pruned before - but looks ridiculously small for the size of leaf.

Part of my memory is saying a tree, rather than a shrub - but thats as far as I've got. Sorry

If its been pruned hard then it might well produce larger than normal leaves for a while.
The general appearance of the unopened buds on the tips of the stem are why I thought it might be a magnolia

I see what you mean... I'll keep watching it and let you know if there is any conclusion. Thanks for your suggestions, I'll keep you posted on it's progress.
