Rich,I too can't take to Monty Don either.Me and Mr Kandy learnt a lot about gardening through Geoff Hamilton's programmes and we also used to like Geoffrey Smith and the late Arthur Billett. They were proper down to earth gardeners who got right down to it and didn't mind getting their hands dirty...

Garden Sponge,I do so like your Avatar :D :D

Is it me but I just cant get my hands dirty cos most of the gardens I work in have major cat n fox poo issues cant be doing with poo under me finger nail the ones I have left that is, people seem to think I should be the one to pick up after their dogs as well before cutting their grass have to amend that thinking i'm afraid

Hi GS I wasn't talking literaly about getting their hands dirty :D :D I hate dirt under my finger nails and ingrained into the skin,so unsightly.I always wear gardening gloves and have done all the time I have been gardening. We have two cats which I know use the garden for their toilet duties,I just use the trowel to get it up and disspose of it...We have an issue of people not cleaning up after their dogs in our village so I can sympathise with you on that one [IMG]

I can't stand wearing gloves when doing any job, but I have recently found those disposable rubber gloves really good. Especially when working in the potting shed.

I wear them on occassions - pruning roses or digging, but prefer finer control on weeds etc. Dirt under the finger nails - is easily cleaned - well most of the time :D

yeah I watch it. I find it a bit patronising even though I'm a beginner, but I like to watch it to see new plants etc.

Watch out GS that you don't get a latex allergy!!
Going back to TV - I would have thought that the new Carol Klein prog on 2 would have given more information on organic fertilizers, planting calendars, and bugs and other stuff that newbies need to know. I find the programme quite patchy, however it is wonderful to see that pros don't always get it right too!

I loved the big dig as it gave very helpful tips which can be used wherever you live. I prefer the back issues of GW, but I still watch monty and co as Bob Flowerdew sometimes has some good tips for organic growing.

I'm afraid Monty Don isn't one of my fav presenters either.......he was sitting at a breakfast table next to us in a hotel in Alice Springs in Oz in Dec! I was too shy to go and ask him what he was doing...in the gardening world that is! He had his film crew and cameras with him, but as it was 40deg C at the time, it would have been some very dry and arid gardening topic ....will have to watch out for something later on in the year.

Just not the same for me since Alan Titchmarsh left. I just hope he does some more fantastic programmes like 'How to be a gardener' & 'The Gardeners Year'

It has never been the same since Geoff Hamilton died. When I met him he seemed quiet a nice sort of a chap.He used to own a garden centre in Kettering until he walked out on his first wife and kids, then remarried the presant one who he stayed with right up until his death. It does seem strange though he has an identical twin brother Geoff.Barnsdale Gardens are not that far from where I live,so we go out to the nursery every now and again...
Alan Titchmarsh has grown on me though. My favourite is Chris Beardshaw another very pleasant chap to talk to [IMG] [IMG]

I hear Alan Tichmarsh is now a Radio 2 DJ on Sundays 6pm playing his favourite classical music. Did anyone see the new series of GW last night?
