Last year my sister/brother-in-law's garden received a lot of damage by foxes. A Camellia which had been growing in a large tub for years took on the appearance of a dead thing and we believe that the foxes might have been responsible for that, too. Nevertheless the Camellia was left alone and it's now showing a few signs of life...little shoots or nodules, appearing here and there. There seems to be an awful lot of dead wood on the plant and I was wondering if, and when, it should be pruned away..or might doing so kill the plant in its early stages of recovery?

Hi jack, our camellia is in full bloom at the minute and is looking better than ever. It has never been pruned. I read somewhere that you should only prune a camellia unless is really necessary. If it is showing signs of life i wouldnt prune it yet. I think you could prune it when it has finished flowering

I have two camellias (a creamy white and a crimson red) in my own garden which are in full bloom now. I have never pruned these.
My brother-in-law's is kept in a large container and has never been as handsome as those in my garden which are planted in soil. I wouldn't normally suggest pruning but there is so much old wood left on the plant after the damage caused by whatever.
Perhaps the best course of action is to leave alone/wait and see.

Ours is just trying to bloom at the moment, but endless wet weather and lots of high winds are damaging and ripping off the flower heads as they appear...
