Help, I have some 10 agapanthus which are in pots in the greenhouse, all are in leaf.
1.Can i plant them in the garden now or do i wait a bit longer.
2.Should i plant them in their pots or remove them from their pots.(i've heard they liked to be restricted).
Any advice would be appreciated. [IMG]

Hi Josephine,I would not plant them out until after the last of the frost's which will be around the end of May begining of June.If they are in small pots then you can pot them on to begin with,or you could put some of them into a large pottery pot and put them somewhere as a focal point again after the frosts have gone.
If you can plant them out, preferably out of their pots in a South Facing border, then you may be lucky if there isn't too much of a bad winter each year,to leave them in the border, perhaps just covering them with a mulch to protect them even further. You could also dig up a couple of the plants and keep them somewhere potted up in a frost free place, through the winter, then at least you will have some back up plants if the others don't survive...Good Luck [IMG]

Bless you Kandyfloss,i was thinking maybe cut the base of the flower pots off and sink them into the ground then i could lift them in winter and put them in the greenhouse. What do you think? [IMG]

Yes you could do that ,but you will be surprised just how big the root system will be by the end of the year,so they might expand the pot anyway and then you will have deformed pots of Agapanthus to try and dig up.Mine are in the greenhouse at the moment in quite large pots, but they are already trying to send out roots out of the drainage holes. It is a difficult one...

What size pots are they in at the moment?

Fantastic plants. I was given offshoots by a neighbour in the IoW and they are just spectacular. Lovely photo, roders.

Roders - your seeds arrived today. Many thanks. I have already sown them, all I need to do now is wait.

[IMG] Hi Josephine I kept mine in pots till they were about 2-3yrs old & a good size, then planted them out eventually in the Autumn.. They also have been out for about 9 or 10 yrs & I have split mine up to.. I have also grown some from my seed.. They take a few yrs before they flower as well, so I would be patient if they are small plants...... ;) :D

Ooops! I have one and it spent all winter outside. Should I have brought it in? It's still alive so perhaps it is in a mild spot.

Josephine seeing as you have ten of these try a couple outside now keep an eye on the weather if it says its going to be frosty just cover them at night take the cover off the following morning, frost soon clears as soon as the sun comes up

Thanks Walnut, i've planted out one for the moment as the forecast is for a cold snap next week, even a threat of snow.
I'll just have to see how that one goes.
    Thanks again. [IMG]
