Has anyone any information, or been involved in an Allotment Association being allowed by the local council to self manage their own site?
any information would be gratefully received

    Hi boygardner
Just want to know if any groups have been involved with this kind of management scheme and if so how successful was it. Is it worth considering providing that the local council will agree.

Problem with the site TG. Shame, I'm seeing about getting my first allotment tomorrow and could do with masses of advice. As for allotments, I live in a Parish Council area, so allotments are self managed, however, rest of the borough are council owned. Have you tried approaching your local council area management?

In Torfaen, the allotments are managed by "allotment groups". There are two groups, one for the south of the borough and one for the north. These groups are made up of representatives of each allotment association and they manage the allotment sites in the area. The groups are overseen by the council via a committee made up of representatives of both groups plus council members. Each group is allocated a grant each year to carry out site improvements e.g. fencing, water supply and pathways. When I first started allotment gardening in the 1970`s we were the first Borough to introduce self management. I hope this is of some help. David.
