I need to move a Berberis shrub. It's about 4ft high x 2ft wide & it will be moved approximately 6 - 8ft from where it is now. Having killed off a large broom last year - not knowing it didn't like to be moved - I thought it best to seek advice first. Having said that, it has to be moved, but @ least if I know it won't tolerate being moved I can perhaps take cutting from it? Would appreciate any advice [IMG] Many thanks.

Hello Pauline, I did exactly the same last year and killed my broom, it was a nice red one too, but as you say if they have to go there is not much you can do. I did take some seeds, but non as yet have germinated.

As to the berberis I have moved them quite successfully its not the best time of year, but if you must, then give it loads of water for several days before move and I would also prune it back well.

I am also considering moving my rosy glow berberis, but for the time being just hacked it back.

    Good luck

Hi Waco, Many thanks for the advice [IMG]

I also had a lovely red broom which I only discovered a few days ago had been broken & died - I suspect the neighbour's kids  - so, i'm sorry to have lost that. I still have two huge yellow ones, one which is right @ my bedroom window & a joy to see every morning. It's got rather bent out of shape & I had to tie it to the fence it had gotten so big & was weighed down @ the front. I'm thinking about pruning it back to a few feet once it's flowered & trying to get it back under control, what do you think? Any help is always appreciated.

As for the Berberis, thank you for that information. I don't have to move it just yet, & it may well be September before I get around to it. There's a lot to be done in my garden this year to bring it to a "low maintenance" garden. I'm looking forward to the end result, though I know there is no end to gardening, which is why I enjoy it [IMG] Thanks again for the help, Waco.

    Pauline.
