Growing from Seed

Hi all,

Im trying to grow my own plants from seeds.They are only border plantes but i want to see how i get on. The only place i have to grow these is the garden shed.Ive bought the seed trays and the right soil and have put the seeds in the soil.Ive also got lids for the trays to try and keep some sort of heat in.The only problem i think is that i dont get enough light from the shed window.In the morning it gets some light.for some reason im not happy.What do you people think ? Is there anything i could do to improve this ? And if they are to grow how long does it take before i start to see shoots growing ?

Thanks for that.The seeds i have planted are:

PETUNIA
ESCHSCHOLZIA
PANSIES
ASTER

Hopefully they will grow. They do get some sunlight in the morning and i make sure the soil is always moist.

How long does it normally take before you start to see shoots ?

 

I would have thought Petunias and Asters would need more heat than you can provide in a cold shed. Personally I would have sown a bit later but I would have sown them on an indoor window sill. Normally i would have sown things that need a bit of heat first of all in a small pot somewhere warm. That gives you a bit of extra time. When they then need to be planted into larger trays conditions are such that i can usually put the trays in a cold greenhouse. They do need plenty of light otherwise they get straggly and don't grow well. In the past before i had a greenhouse I have had trays of plants balanced on virtually every window ledge in the house.

I Have got my seeds in a small propogator (heated glass box). just have to keep an eye on them. they need light and warmth to grow.

 

Hi nutty norah,a good idea is to make a note of the plant,date sown etc on a little plastic lable that you stick in the soil.(look on the back of the seed packet for expected germination time etc.)If you find they dont germinate well,for whatever reason,just try again.It`s all experience.Good luck.
