    Hi everyone.

(I have posted this topic before but it has dissapeared somehow. Please note that I am not advertising anything and so this is not spam).

Basically, I am currently creating a gardening website and my aim is to include everything garden-related. I have included everything I can think of but would appreciate your suggestions (as fellow gardeners). So if you have any suggestions on what you would like to see on a gardening website, please leave a quick reply.

    Many thanks,
    GardeningSite.

If you wish our help, it would be helpful if you provide a little more information. What kind of website developing - i.e. what is its purpose, e.g. providing gardening information or ?????. What have you included already - that kind of thing.

Hi again. Sorry to be so vague.

Basically, I am making a website that I want to cover anything and everything gardening-related. It will be a site which will provide useful and practical information on all aspects of gardening and will hopefully have its own forum (like this one).

I have already included information on subjects such as details on:
    = Inidivdual plant species
    = Growing fruit and vegetables
    = Common weeds and treatments
    = Plant disorders / pests
    = Wildlife gardening
    = House plants
    etc...

And I have put together some advice on subjects such as buying plants and bulbs, building and maintaining a pond, soil and compost types, 'the gardeners calendar' and so on.

What I am asking is what else you would like to see on a decent gardening website. For example, less common subjects like fungi species or anything along those lines.

    Many thanks for any help.

I visit a couple of satellite club/forums and behind each one there are people who work very hard to keep them in place as is the case here at GC . I just hope you have thought it through.

Hi again, I am sorry if I came accross as unkind or something but I am not trying to take you away from this site and onto mine.

I am a dedicated gardener and have a large wealth of knowledge. I am 100% dedicated to getting my site up and maintaining it and simply need some advice from other gardeners about what to include.

well, links under one umbrella would be very useful. At the moment we all google to find what we want (and probably always will, to be honest as new things are always appearing!) But a user-friendly database of what places sell what, and possibly on who advises on what, in a systematised way would be useful to me

I think the problem, GardeningSite, is that there are quite a few websites that do similar things, so it's hard to say "do this because no-one else does" - I think it may be more relevant to say "do this better than everyone else does". I think Shoot seems to have some good ideas, and this site is obviously great, but as Nixon said, in general we tend to Google everything to find out more.

Personally, I would like a review system of on-line websites (a little like Amazon-style customer reviews perhaps?), plant finders with lots of pictures (sometimes you want a closeup on a leaf or flower, and websites only have full-scale pictures, or vice-versa), and perhaps a digest of the best gardening articles from the past month from various sources (but I'm sure that would be subject to license fees).

It's a saturated market, but a lot of websites are quite shoddy looking (no doubt created by people who know a lot about gardening but not much about web design) or are not UK-based (the US being the main one - with hardiness zones, growing tropical plants outside etc ;) )

If you can create a site that's professional, but friendly to use at the same time (gardeners are a social bunch!) I think you'll be making progress..

    Hope that helps

    Cheers,

    Dave

one thing I would like, as a professional jobbing gardener is some way of finding small quantities of gardening supplies, eg my current shopping list is
    wheelbarrow .. strong
    gloves .. thornproof
    lawn fertiliser ....... 10 kg
a lawn edging tool with a long handle
if any1 tried to find these items on one site ......

 Sorry, GC suits me just fine and I don't really see the need to change it. There is always scope to add new threads. Nothing to stop people going to other sites if they want something different, but the fact that so many new members have signed on recently seems to indicate that Nathan is doing a great job!!!

Yes Nathan is doing a great job, never seen anything better, but the Lady Gardener does have a valid point.

Makes me wonder if a compromise could be found on this site by adding links/info on where to find those problem items or just normal stuff, yet not burden Nathan too much with all this.

Simply, each of us could add the info. of where we found it (as and when it happens) into a section specially for this. After a time, somebody could organize the whole lot into something more presentable (and probably on a county basis) - guess I just volunteered!

It maynot help the person at the time, but at least it would get better and better for the others later - and I am sorry GardeningSite but I just don't want to go to another site as well!

    Just my 2 cents [IMG]

DAG, would it need to be people who are very up-to-the-minute on computers to do as you suggest, or could anyone do it? It's likely to end up being landed on Nathan otherwise, however much goodwill was involved.

I dont know nixonf23, certainly I am not very 'withit' on computers, perhaps its wishful thinking but I imagine that if somebody could tweek a few more bells and whistles to add the facility in the first place, we all add info. when we find it, and somebody like me be prepared to spend sometime organizing it or whatever, it might be possible?

I'm prepared to give some time if others can provide the expertise. It would take sometime of course but we would all gain from the facility in the end! Otherwise it's like reinventing the wheel for each of us. Again, just a thought! [IMG]
