Quick Stupid Question.........

Hi,

sorry if this is a really obvious question, I'm just learning!

One of my plant labels says "prune to ground level in winter". Does this mean I cut the entire thing down to almost nothing? Will it really grow back? Seems severe.............thanks for helping a non-greenfingered person!

Could be, easier to help if you can tell us the plant name. Some labels can be wrong.

Its a Houttynia (flame).

 

I have this in my garden and it just takes care of itself. Winter knocks it back and it comes back twice as strong the year after. This is the one I have, watch them as they can overun you. In fact mine grew from next doors!

Yes, I've got one too, as you do BM, I Leave it to its own devices, just cutting back the foliage in early spring when it looks totally rubbish (& you can see new shoots) - how sheltered a spot is it in Teresa D? & what sort of soil? (I notice you're a bit further north than myself & BM!!!)

It's actually in a pot in my patio as I have no propper garden. Will this make a difference? I assume it won't grow totally out of control as it's in a container?

I'm really new to this gardening lark, have a few pots now and patio already looking better.

 

It won't grow totally out of control anyway except in damp conditions. Mine has been in a pot for ages and as long as you remember to water it frequently it should be OK. Mine is in full sun as its' pot is very heavy but it does better in damp shade.
I never cut mine back either.
