I recently bought seeds varying from 99p to £3. Then i visted a local garden centre and bought 12 sprout seedlings in a poly box for £1.99.
I admit that its not as much fun watching the seed sprout but @ £1.99 it seemed cheaper and less agro than buying seed.

Hi folks. Whils`t not wishing to defend seed companies, I`m guessing that labour costs are quite high ? Especially when producing hybrids. Also, I would imagine land values have a part to play. I work for a well-known aircraft manufacturer that had a factory in Hatfield and, because it wasn`t making the sort of profit they wanted, they shut the factory and sold the land for developement. I guess that all businesses have to make a profit, but it`s probably true to say, some make more than others ;) Cheers...freddy.

I don't mind paying as long as the seeds are fresh, too many these days are packeted as fresh when they are not,in a recent test on the freshness of seed t&m came out as the freshest but then again they probably have one of the biggest turnovers.

Hi walnut. As with all things, we should get what we pay for. We spend a lot of time and effort gardening, so, it`s only right that such products are `fit for purpose` Cheers...freddy.

I have found filling my garden has been very easy with cuttings, seeds and self seeded plants from friends, grandma and other relations. Now I'm returning the favour with this years cornus cuttings going all around Norfolk, foxgloves too.
The problem i found is planning. Seeds are available on plants over a shorter period of time, than those in packets.
    Good luck

Peter - you could try the mighty Ebay. 20 Rhodochiton seeds £2.24 including postage. You can obtain most seeds on Ebay , the couple of packs I have bought seemed OK.

    Hi all,
Have a look at www.specialplants.net - really good for unusual ornamental things (but not veggies, sadly). Prices v. reasonable IMO!

Pete yes I love this plant. A few years back a friend gave one to me and i forgot to give it winter protection and it died, since then ive been wanting to replace it, but have always been put off by the price. If you are successful perhaps you could start your own supply to the forum??? [IMG]
