    Wow Bananaman,
Is it really as tall as it looks? Looking at your pics I so want one, what are they like in the wind? My gardens inland/coastal, dry, full sun and windy. Suppose it'd have to be a pot on the more sheltered patio?

Woh, that is well bonkers! Do you have planning permission for you multi-storey herbaceous monster?

Poppy33 I think the flower opens downwards, the 'big podgy thing' is the bracts enfurling the flowers as they develop. As the bracts open backwards and upwards they expose the flowers which are visible underneath (the hairy bits under the umbrella if you will) to pollinators. As they fade, the bracts and in this case the unfertilized flowers fall off, leaving the long notched stalk hanging down to that podgy bit which keeps on unfurling. Funky old thing isn't it?

Sorry Cobbybrook, I still have the monkey and hes recovered. I have another banana which isn't far off flowering this year and I expect another sucker to put on sufficient growth this year to flower in 2007. :D

Chicken pellets mainly. They grow in gravel so I part some of the gravel and pour in a pile. Then plenty of water and regular dilute/disolved chicken pellets via watering can. And lots and lots of sun. It has taken 4 summers to get from a small baby banana to 7 foot of trunk and flowering. But you have to put the effort in to protect the trunks in winter especially as the flowering season spans the depths of winter. I had 2 80w flood lamps on from 6pm till 8am at the coldest times but during the day the way I constructed the 'banana house' daytime temperatures exceeded 20c in full sun. :D Well worth it though, I love em.

Thanks Peas, grinch what nanas have you got?
