I keep finding a lot of old bottles and broken glass in the garden. As I'm registered with an online genealogy site, I checked the house name against census information and found there has been a house here since 1851.

The garden is about 1 acre and at the far end are the ruins of an old house. I've had a dig around and found a bottle dump probably going back to 1920 or 1920 as there were lots of paste bottles. Yesterday I rummaged around and found two victorian bottles, one green, one blue.

Is anyone else interested in collecting bottles and do they have any tips?

wow, i was happy to find 2 intact bottles when starting a new part of the garden in my old house, but look at that lot! the 2 i found were a drinks bottle, with a local manufactures logo on it and an internal screw thread on the top. the other was a small, unmarked, uncapped one. i still have them, out on display!
I stopped digging shortly after finding them, when i thought i'd found a bomb! Still to this day i'm not sure what it was i found, my elderly neighbour thought it might have been some sort of large battery or similar, ' borrowed' from the local pit. anyway, it didn't go bang as the binmen took it away! :D

Lovely collection there. Have you any ideas as to where in relation to a house, bottles may be buried and how deep?

I realised that before refuse collections folk had to dispose of their own rubbish which tended to be tipped 'down hill' from the houses as it was probably done so when a cart had been filled and therefore heavy. The tips are often only inches below the surface if they have been undisturbed, and even if they have, the older bottles will be much deeper than more recent ones.
Caution! Don't get carried away and dig under a tip and along a rich vein of bottles. I had a friend buried alive when he did!
    Here are some more.. :D

The furthest from the house,or where there is a lot of crockery and glass scattered around. Walking over rough grass areas even feels different over old tips.
